Girls is the second mini album by aespa. It was released on July 8, 2022 with "Girls" serving as the album's title track.

The physical album comes in seven versions: Kwangya, Real World, Digipack (four covers), and International.

Background[]

On June 1, an intro video was posted on their social media accounts which revealed that aespa will be releasing their second mini album, Girls, on July 8.[1] The track "Illusion" was then pre-released on the same day. Pre-orders for the album started on June 2.[2] "Life's Too Short (English Ver.)" was pre-released on June 24.[2]

Composition[]

"Illusion" is described as a hip hop dance song that features a strong 808 bass and sounds that are able to catch the attention of listeners. In the song, the harmony and rap stands out. The lyrics show the group's color and talks about comparing wanting to devour an opponent in a goblin of fire to seducing.[3]

"Life's Too Short" is described as a medium-tempo pop genre song. Throughout the song you will be able to hear the hopeful vocals and the guitar riffs. The lyrics talk about enjoying life as desired without having regrets. This is a message to all their haters.[4]

"Girls" is described as a dance genre song that features a synth sound that's rough-textured and a strong wobble bass. The lyrics talk about the avatars and aespa fighting in a battle with Black Mamba. A new story emerges with their helper NAVIS.[5]

"Lingo" is described as a dance genre song.The listener will be able hear energetic drums and a county sound that contradicts the bass. aespa's unique charms will show through the song. "ICU" is described as a medium tempo ballad genre song. The song features an acoustic guitar and piano. The lyrics talk about expressing yourself and healing.[6]

Promotions[]

aespa performed the song for the first time at Coachella on April 23, 2022.[7]

aespa performed at Good Morning America for their summer concert series on July 8, 2022. They performed "Girls" for the first time along with "Life's Too Short" and "Black Mamba".[8]

The girls held a comeback live through YouTube and Tik-Tok on July 11th at 8pm KST.

Commercial performance[]

As of July 7th, according to SM Entertainment Girls had surpassed 1,610,517 pre-orders.[9]

Hanteo reported that Girls sold 806,891 copies in its first day of release.[10] In its first week, it sold 1,126,068 copies which makes aespa the first girl group to surpass 1 million copies in a week on Hanteo.[11]

Circle Chart reported that Girls sold 1,426,487 copies during the week of July 3 to July 9. It debuted at #1 on the weekly chart.[12] For the month of June, it sold 1,645,255 copies and debuted at #1 on the monthly chart.[13] On September 8, it received a platinum certification for surpassing 1 million copies.[14]

Girls debuted at #3 on the Billboard 200. It also debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart with 56,000 equivalent album units sold.[15]
